Summary

The men on board Her Britannic Majesty's Ships Terror and Erebus had every expectation of triumph。 They were part of Sir John Franklin's 1845 expedition - as scientifically advanced an enterprise as had ever set forth - and theirs were the first steam-driven vessels to go in search of the fabled North-West Passage。
But the ships have now been trapped in the Arctic ice for nearly two years。 Coal and provisions are running low。 Yet the real threat isn't the constantly shifting landscape of white or the flesh-numbing temperatures, dwindling supplies or the vessels being slowly crushed by the unyielding grip of the frozen ocean。
No, the real threat is far more terrifying。 There is something out there that haunts the frigid darkness, which stalks the ships, snatching one man at a time - mutilating, devouring。 A nameless thing, at once nowhere and everywhere, this terror has become the expedition's nemesis。
When Franklin meets a terrible death, it falls to Captain Francis Crozier of HMS Terror to take command and lead the remaining crew on a last, desperate attempt to flee south across the ice。 With them travels an Eskimo woman who cannot speak。 She may be the key to survival - or the harbinger of their deaths。 And as scurvy, starvation and madness take their toll, as the Terror on the ice become evermore bold, Crozier and his men begin to fear there is no escape。。。

Just fantastic。 A fictional exploration of the possible demise of the infamous Franklin expedition to find the Northwest Passage。 The book succeeds on two levels: as supernatural horror, and as survivalist horror in which the ice is practically its own monstrous character。 Probably not for everyone; it's a very long novel that takes its time to get where it's going。 But all those extra pages are really doing something, placing us in the ice with these desperate people。 For those who like their h Just fantastic。 A fictional exploration of the possible demise of the infamous Franklin expedition to find the Northwest Passage。 The book succeeds on two levels: as supernatural horror, and as survivalist horror in which the ice is practically its own monstrous character。 Probably not for everyone; it's a very long novel that takes its time to get where it's going。 But all those extra pages are really doing something, placing us in the ice with these desperate people。 For those who like their horror to start slow and just get creepier and creepier with every page, I can't recommend this book strongly enough。 。。。more

I enjoyed this 900+ page book so much that I Googled a lot of it。 The fate of these 2 ships is my current fascination, if not obsession。 After I finished the book, I bought the AMC series on Blu Ray and watched it。 Now that I have a better familiarity with it, I'm enjoying reading it again immediately even more。 It reminds me of Moby Dick, but it held my attention better。 Why not a 5 star review? There were a few parts that went on too long and some confusion on the way the scenes are not presen I enjoyed this 900+ page book so much that I Googled a lot of it。 The fate of these 2 ships is my current fascination, if not obsession。 After I finished the book, I bought the AMC series on Blu Ray and watched it。 Now that I have a better familiarity with it, I'm enjoying reading it again immediately even more。 It reminds me of Moby Dick, but it held my attention better。 Why not a 5 star review? There were a few parts that went on too long and some confusion on the way the scenes are not presented in chronological order, so you get the sense of going back and forth in time。 It's done so that the author can give us bits of information in a specific order。 If this sounds like fun to you, you'll like it。 。。。more

While it's length and repetitiveness keep it from completely winning me over, its setting, characters, and concept are enough to let me recommend this book。 While it's length and repetitiveness keep it from completely winning me over, its setting, characters, and concept are enough to let me recommend this book。 。。。more

DNF。 I don’t want to read this shit watch the AMC miniseries Soo Hugh and David Kajganich took this idea and executed it perfectly。 Soo Hugh is a woman of color and thank God because Silna is actually treated as a human being and fully realized character in the series。 I can’t tell you how much I don’t like this book。

Engrossing, had to know what happened!Loved the details and the sense of dread, enjoyed the arcs of most of the characters。 Not convinced by a few details of the ending at first, but it grew on me。 Overall though a real page turner。

Extremely repetitive to the point where some passages are unreadable。 One of the human antagonists somehow was never tried for obvious crimes and mutinies throughout the novel, despite all the persons in charge being well aware of this。

This was a fantastic book。 Very hard to categorize。 Mostly categorize as an horror novel, but I think it can be very misleading, because it’s, in my opinion, a historical horror sub-genre, but two third historical and one third horror, so if you’re going in looking for a big spooky monster book or something you will be left on your appetite。Based on true explorer and exploration journey, but since the crew disappear never to be seen again, the author allows himself the space to extrapolate and g This was a fantastic book。 Very hard to categorize。 Mostly categorize as an horror novel, but I think it can be very misleading, because it’s, in my opinion, a historical horror sub-genre, but two third historical and one third horror, so if you’re going in looking for a big spooky monster book or something you will be left on your appetite。Based on true explorer and exploration journey, but since the crew disappear never to be seen again, the author allows himself the space to extrapolate and go to fiction to fill the blank of history。 The historical part is very descriptive and explain, can of Melville Moby Dick in some way, which can be heavy to some reader。 Personally, I find it fascinating! And the fiction part is not less good, bringing many ideas and theories on what could have happen, some more fantastical than some, some being quite realistic。Heavy and slow, but truly an amazing book, that could have been title The Terrors, plural, because of all the terrifying stuff that those explorers have to dealt with。 Original and solid, after reading and loving the Hyperion Cantos, and now The Terror, Dan Simmons prove to be quite an author that isn’t afraid of going in very different direction and genre from one book to another。 I have already a good bunch of his books and I can’t wait to pick another one soon! 。。。more

A story of the folly of imperial exploring, fascinating, beautiful, terrifying。 Repetitive at times (lists of names, lists of tasks ) but I felt like that was a successfully used technique rather than a flaw in the writing, reflecting the endless days of darkness and cold, reflecting the drudgery if the expedition。 Most of the characters were well done, and I actually really liked Lady Silence, despite the aforementioned silence。 Appreciate that Simmons balanced out the classic trope of the evil A story of the folly of imperial exploring, fascinating, beautiful, terrifying。 Repetitive at times (lists of names, lists of tasks ) but I felt like that was a successfully used technique rather than a flaw in the writing, reflecting the endless days of darkness and cold, reflecting the drudgery if the expedition。 Most of the characters were well done, and I actually really liked Lady Silence, despite the aforementioned silence。 Appreciate that Simmons balanced out the classic trope of the evil sodomite with some of my favourite gay characters I’ve read in recent books。 Death scenes well done, and book tied together in an enjoyable fashion。 Don’t read this during winter 。。。more

DNF。 Loved the voice and the setting。 The book was way too slow, way too long, way too sexist and way too full of boring characters to be a fun experience though。

This was better than I thought。 It helps that it is as story about two ships that try to find the Northwest Passage (I guess? that's not super clear) and instead end up frozen in ice for two years, get scurvy, imagine terrible monsters, and resort to cannibal - and nearly all die。 This is my kind of book。 But also pretty well written for a trash history。 This was better than I thought。 It helps that it is as story about two ships that try to find the Northwest Passage (I guess? that's not super clear) and instead end up frozen in ice for two years, get scurvy, imagine terrible monsters, and resort to cannibal - and nearly all die。 This is my kind of book。 But also pretty well written for a trash history。 。。。more

I recently watched AMC's The Terror and found it to be one of the top ten shows I have seen in my lifetime。 When I heard that it was based on a book, I leapt at the chance to read it。 Boy, was that a mistake。Please spare yourself this ridiculous novel where Lady Silence/Silna is naked nearly EVERY SINGLE TIME for the benefit of gawking white men。 For no reason at all。 Oh, did I mention that she has her tongue cut out too? After all, not only is she exotic, she's quiet and subservient too! There's also an Eskimo woman literally called "big tits。" Yup。 Why is it so many white male authors have such great ideas, but they always can't help but to grossly objectify women in their novels? It's at the point where I'm suspicious they simply put their own fetishes in their writing。 The TV show is so much more superior and to the point。 I also vastly prefer the ending of the show than the absurd Pocahontas-esque taming/mating/relationship that Silna and Crozier have (who by the way is a flaming racist to the Eskimos prior to this)。 。。。more

Excellent novel, truly thrilling from page one。 Put it side by side to the tv series, the book is much better。 Definitely worth the read。

Not sure what I think of this。 I came for horror and was severely disappointed。 Yet, at the same time, the story of the sailors stuck for years in the arctic wastes was captivating。 The truth was the story didn't need a monster。 Scurvy was much scarier。 Hunger was much more terrifying。 There were also issues with structure and many important dramatic moments were thrown aside, often presented in the least urgent way。 Think of the first attempted mutiny。 Then there were the dream sequences。 I nev Not sure what I think of this。 I came for horror and was severely disappointed。 Yet, at the same time, the story of the sailors stuck for years in the arctic wastes was captivating。 The truth was the story didn't need a monster。 Scurvy was much scarier。 Hunger was much more terrifying。 There were also issues with structure and many important dramatic moments were thrown aside, often presented in the least urgent way。 Think of the first attempted mutiny。 Then there were the dream sequences。 I never liked dreams at the best of times but some of these seem to go on forever。 The ending is a damp squib。 There are a number of strings that needed tying up but were left untouched。 The big finale is forgotten and the book takes a very odd left turn for a while which was disconcerting。 This left turn was interesting but came at the wrong time。 If anything, this sums this book up perfectly。 There are many good moments but they are all over the place,Finally, The Terror is far too long for its own good。 784 pages to tell a horror story that could have been told in 300 pages, or a real-life survival that could have been told in 400-500 pages。 Two different books slammed together like potatoes in a mash。 There was too much in this that I liked to say I hated this book, but I would have preferred two different books。 。。。more

Very well writtenFact mixed with fiction& very well put together。 The hardships the navy men underwent is amazing & admirable。 The theme is Franklin & Crozier's doomed expedition of the North West Passage。 Have also seen Ridley Scott 's drama which was also excellent, the story here is adapted somewhat but that didn't matter。 Very well writtenFact mixed with fiction& very well put together。 The hardships the navy men underwent is amazing & admirable。 The theme is Franklin & Crozier's doomed expedition of the North West Passage。 Have also seen Ridley Scott 's drama which was also excellent, the story here is adapted somewhat but that didn't matter。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Fue una historia interesante, no puedo negarlo。 Después de todo la tragedia y el misterio real de lo que le ocurrió a estos barcos es bastante cautivador。 Sin embargo a pesar de que me gusto el sombrío y desolador tono que el escritor imprimió en su recreación ficticia, debo decir que en momentos se extiende de mas。 El Terror es un libro que podría haber sido mas conciso sobre todo considerando lo repetitivo que se vuelve poco antes de abandonar los barcos y después de que los abandonaron。 Ya qu Fue una historia interesante, no puedo negarlo。 Después de todo la tragedia y el misterio real de lo que le ocurrió a estos barcos es bastante cautivador。 Sin embargo a pesar de que me gusto el sombrío y desolador tono que el escritor imprimió en su recreación ficticia, debo decir que en momentos se extiende de mas。 El Terror es un libro que podría haber sido mas conciso sobre todo considerando lo repetitivo que se vuelve poco antes de abandonar los barcos y después de que los abandonaron。 Ya que es solo una sucesión de tragedias hasta su inevitable final。 El drama se estanca porque el final se vuelve predecible con la excepción de lo que le ocurre al personaje de Crozier。 Como dije, me gustó, pero pudo ser una historia mas ágil。 。。。more

I would have loved this book but how many different ways can you describe boobs and WHY is that the only way you can describe female characters(no matter their age!!)? I honestly thought the thing about male authors and boobs was an exaggeration but it is not。 I am so glad the AMC serious did not include ANY boobs, no pointless sex scene between Crozier and Silence (ew) and even fleshed out the few female characters that the author doesn’t know how to write。 I guess I should mention what I like I would have loved this book but how many different ways can you describe boobs and WHY is that the only way you can describe female characters(no matter their age!!)? A brilliantly done and well-researched story that is worth the patience and time to experience in all of its bleakly chilling and suspenseful ways。 While some could say that an occasional struggle with the pace of a book would warrant a lower rating, I found that it just took a small adjustment on my approach and I was back to loving it in no time。 It does have some aspects and descriptions that one can sometimes raise a questioning eyebrow to, but they are not things that I personally felt dras A brilliantly done and well-researched story that is worth the patience and time to experience in all of its bleakly chilling and suspenseful ways。 While some could say that an occasional struggle with the pace of a book would warrant a lower rating, I found that it just took a small adjustment on my approach and I was back to loving it in no time。 It does have some aspects and descriptions that one can sometimes raise a questioning eyebrow to, but they are not things that I personally felt drastically detracted from or ruined any of the material。 The type of horror in this book is one that hits you on so many levels and it lets your mind run with making it even more of an intense, disturbing scare。 This book has now become one of my top recommendations for horror/suspense stories to those that can appreciate a heavy bleak flavor。 。。。more

The best part of this book is the story of arctic exploration and the struggle the explorers go through every minute of life on the ship, you could remove the supernatural element completely and I don't think the book would suffer at all。I thoroughly enjoyed the attention to detail and human drama presented here, and was really attached and rooting for some of the characters, but struggled with parts focusing on the monster on the ice, and thought the ending was a bit of a let down The best part of this book is the story of arctic exploration and the struggle the explorers go through every minute of life on the ship, you could remove the supernatural element completely and I don't think the book would suffer at all。I thoroughly enjoyed the attention to detail and human drama presented here, and was really attached and rooting for some of the characters, but struggled with parts focusing on the monster on the ice, and thought the ending was a bit of a let down 。。。more

I had such high hopes for this book。 It's solid at its center: a speculative tale about what might have happened to the two ships that disappeared while trying to force the Northwest Passage in the late 1840s。 Hiding inside this 769-page letdown is a 350-page five-star novel。 It's bogged down in too much repetition - we don't need to know every article of cold-weather gear every sailor is wearing in every scene! My opinion might not mean all that much as I am a fairly casual reader but his is probably my favorite book at the moment。The characters were all very fleshed out and worth caring about as opposed to being expendable slabs of meat, the setting was terrifying and the plot kept a good pace despite the length and number of actors。 It kept me up a few nights far past when I wanted to stop reading and go to bed。I reccomend this one to anyone who wants a horror story with a late 1800s/early 1900s clas My opinion might not mean all that much as I am a fairly casual reader but his is probably my favorite book at the moment。The characters were all very fleshed out and worth caring about as opposed to being expendable slabs of meat, the setting was terrifying and the plot kept a good pace despite the length and number of actors。 It kept me up a few nights far past when I wanted to stop reading and go to bed。I reccomend this one to anyone who wants a horror story with a late 1800s/early 1900s classic literature feeling。(I apologize if that didn't really make sense。 I am not great at articulating my opinions on things and this is my first review。) 。。。more

I love Dan Simmons, but this one left me conflicted。 There is an absolutely exhausting amount of misogyny packed into a book that has almost no women in it。 I picked this up for the horror and the story of ice exploration and if I have to listen to one more description of a woman's chest I'm going to lose itBesides that, I have to say, the first half was a bit of a slog for me。 When things change about halfway though, I found it infinitely more engaging。 I probably read the second half twice as I love Dan Simmons, but this one left me conflicted。 There is an absolutely exhausting amount of misogyny packed into a book that has almost no women in it。 I picked this up for the horror and the story of ice exploration and if I have to listen to one more description of a woman's chest I'm going to lose itBesides that, I have to say, the first half was a bit of a slog for me。 When things change about halfway though, I found it infinitely more engaging。 I probably read the second half twice as quickly as the first。 All in all, I don't regret making my way through this chunky novel, but it's not without its issues 。。。more
